We are excited to be gearing up for our spring trip to El Salvador. Continuing to work with Casa La Atarraya in Ahuachapan, we will be working on their computer network and improving security by installing a UniFi Protect camera system.
We would like to thank Trinity United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown, NC whose missions committee, individual members, and UMM Group made donations to our trip. White Lake Marine also made a generous donation of both equipment and funds for this trip.

Thank you to all our supporters!! Because of your gifts- we had a great trip to El Salvador. New radios for the school buses, new handheld radios for the staff, 2 large suitcases of baby clothes, a robotics kit for the students, and more was donated.
See our Facebook page for the video the school sent of the students and the robot they built! We are planing to return to El Salvador this February!!! This will be a small group of travelers and we will be doing some maintenance and expanding of the network. We are also looking to take some much needed supplies for the community. We are collecting baby clothes and school supplies. Please help us support the school and community by donating now!
If you shop on Amazon.com did you know you can support our work and it won't cost you a dime? 828 Networks is a listed charity on AmazonSmile. If you visit smile.amazon.com, search for 828 Networks and select us as your charity, then Amazon will donate 0.5% of any eligible purchase. 1/2 of a percent is not a large number, but every bit helps!! Please join in our effort to help students gain the tools to succeed.
It is official! The first trip is done!
We had a great week in El Salvador!! While the main project was installing a 1.8M Dish for VSAT based communications providing the school with 24/7 unlimited internet, installing campus wide WiFi with Ubiquiti Unifi APs, 8 new laptops, and a MakerBot Replicator 2 -3D printer- those projects seem small compared to the human connections made on the trip. Visiting several needy communities with feeding programs, the local hospital for newborn care packets, and a public school to pass out 50 new backpacks and school supplies we were greeted by smiling faces and loving embraces. I know every member of the team was deeply moved and inspired. While the hardware may be in place, we must keep the system online. The monthly cost for satellite service is not cheep. We are only able to keep a small 1.5Mbps download stream- on a 20:1 contention ratio. Our goal is to increase the speed of the school's connection to at least 3.0Mbps. We will also plan on trips to maintain and upgrade equipment as needed. The school services students from K-12 and expanding to pre-college classes. The impact Casa La Atarraya makes in the community is amazing. Not only does the school provide the very best education to the students, they are involved in the community at large with many projects. We pray you consider supporting our mission or the school directly. Seldom can such gifts take a direct path to impact the future of children and the community. We officially are raising funds for the ongoing support of Casa La Atarraya! We have both a standing donation page on our site where you can give both one time and recurring donations to our mission AND a GoFundMe page to raise the funds for a year's worth of internet access.
Please note that all donations go to fund our programs. No funds are used for 'administrative' overhead. We donate all of our time and cover the costs of operating 828 from our personal pockets (like this website!). You can check back on this news/blog page for updates, as well as our Facebook page. |
